Beneath a darkened, ice-coated sea off the coast of Greenland, a courageous diver encounters the big, skeletal stays of minke whales. Illuminating a historic and cultural apply, the spectral picture by Alex Dawson received the 2024 Underwater Photographer of the Year contest, drawing consideration to humanity’s affect on marine mammals.
This 12 months’s contest was probably the most aggressive up to now, garnering 6,500 submissions from across the globe. Further winners embrace JingGong Zhang’s picture of hormonal Zoarchias main eelpouts sparring over nests throughout breeding season and a shot of a famished Mahi Mahi chomping on a sardine by Lisa Stengel.
