Whereas dense cities carry an air of extraversion on the floor, it doesn’t take a lot digging past this superficial layer to see that generally even essentially the most crowded locations may also be essentially the most solitary. Keita Morimoto (previously) uncovers this double-edged expertise by cinematic depictions of road scenes rendered in acrylic and oil paint.
Dwelling and dealing on the planet’s most populous metropolis, the Tokyo-based artist has a firsthand understanding of what it means to traverse the paradoxical. “Assembly and attending to know individuals within the metropolis, and observing how such a vibrant place can nonetheless isolate so many, has profoundly influenced my work,” says Morimoto. “These experiences have pushed me to discover deeper themes of connection and solitude.”
Morimoto’s topics and cityscapes are guided by comparable themes of distinction and opposition. Glowing merchandising machines, vacant telephone cubicles, neon indicators, and illuminated telephone screens radiate towards the darkness of evening and place an emphasis on obscurity. What relationship do people have to those mechanical objects, whether or not they’re current inside the composition or not? As a number of figures congregate on darkish road corners and repair their eyes upon these lit units, why do none of them work together? As the sensation of disconnect rises to the floor, Moriomoto’s painterly strokes mimic an virtually pixelated impact, actually and figuratively highlighting a fractured standpoint.
Morimoto is preparing for a forthcoming solo present at Long Story Short in Paris and one other at Almine Rech in New York Metropolis later this 12 months. His first e-book launch may even accompany a solo presentation of latest works at GINZA SIX in Tokyo. Comply with together with the artist’s busy 12 months through Instagram and his website.
